Frequently Asked Questions

When did climate awareness first begin?

Scientists' first warnings of climate change came in the 1960s, but the general public was first made largely aware in the late 1980s. You can see how the US climates have changed since the 1980s with this interactive map.

Is there a "deadline" for making a difference?

It's difficult to set a specific date, but many goals name 2030 and 2050 as their deadlines. A better indicator is global temperatures. Right now, experts don't want global temperatures to rise 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial temperatures.

Is there any good news considering it's the climate crisis?

Well, the crisis isn't good news, but the fact that people around the world are trying to stop it is good news! You can find these stories on our Good News page.

How can I connect with other people that want to fight climate change?

There are a lot of ways to connect with like-minded individuals and communities, including right here! Check out our Forum for posts from website members. If you're interested, you can contact us using the forms below to become a member at no cost! If you want to connect to people locally, you can check out environmental resources through the Environmental Protection Agency.

Does climate change just affect weather?

No, climate and weather are very different. "Weather" is if it's cloudy or sunny from one day to the next. "Climate" is the general environment of an area, like a desert or a tropical rainforest. Climate affects what crops can grow, what animals can thrive, and what communities can access water. Messing up the climate messes up the whole ecosystem, which is why solving the climate crisis is so important.

Does recycling make a difference?

Recycling does make a difference when done properly! Recycling keeps garbage out of our landfills and reduces our carbon footprint. The key is to follow proper recycling etiquette, which you can learn about here.

How can I tell government officials I want to see more done about climate change?

There are lots of ways to show our government the importance of climate change. You can vote for representatives that prioritize climate change. You can also write your representative(s) a letter and sign petitions, like this one to voice your concern.
